If you’ve been sleeping on Drake like myself, this is your opportunity to give em a listen. I’ve heard a couple of tracks from him and he’s semi-nice and he has a growing buzz online. You may have seen him on Degrassi where he plays Jimmy. This mixtape features frequent collaborator Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, and freestyles on some of the hottest beats out right now. Album Review: Common – Universal Mind Control
10 12 2008Earlier this year, Common made the announcement that his upcoming album will not be as conscious as his prior releases, and it will not feature any production from Kanye West. Common’s last two albums Be and Finding Forever were almost fully produced by Kanye, and their undeniable chemistry helped revitalize Common’s career. On Common’s latest LP Universal Mind Control, Com decided to collaborate with The Neptunes to create feel good music. From the start of Common Sense’s catalog, he branded himself as a smooth, lyrical, conscious MC. With Common’s change of music direction, will fans find this album mind controlling or will it share the same criticism as Electric Circus?

Dope or Nope 12/08 – Another Jay-z Brooklyn Anthem
8 12 2008Jay-z feat. MC Lyte – BK Anthem
Jay’s second Brooklyn track this month (see last Monday’s DoN Brooklyn (Go Hard)). I’m not sure if this will be featured on Blueprint 3 or the Notorious Soundtrack, hence the Biggie shout outs. Production wise it’s not the greatest, but Hov flows nicely over this beat. What you think? Peep the full story for the download link.

Takin’ Em Back – 12/5
5 12 2008Common – I Used To Love H.E.R.
Like yesterday’s Be blog, I’m posting another entry in honor of the release of Universal Mind Control this Tuesday. Before “The Light”, “The Corner”, or “The People”, Common made one of the best hip hop tracks of all time. “I Used to Love H.E.R.” tells the story of hip hop’s evolution, except Com is referring to hip hop as a girl. Common even references the west coast era of hip hop in this track which sparked the unlikely feud with Ice Cube. This track is purely timeless!

Rest In Peace: Pimp C
5 12 2008
Believe it or not, it’s been a year since Chad Butler aka Pimp C was found dead in his Hotel room from an accidental overdose. He was one half of the Houston duo UGK, and built a reputation pimp filled lyrics and being outspoken in interviews. UGK fans wondered if the death of Pimp C would have an effect on UGK’s music, but Bun-B is still hard at work on the duo’s upcoming album UGK 4 Life. Read the rest of this entry »
