Mack 10 & Tha Dogg Pound – Nothin’ But The Cavi Hit

A certain someone complained about my lack of LA music here on SpazAppeal so I’m posting one of my favorite throwback joints from the West. “Nothin’ But The Cavi Hit Shit” was the main single off of the Rhyme & Reason Soundtrack in the late 90’s, pushing the documentary’s soundtrack to Gold status. Aside from me posting more LA material and the track being timeless, I’m also posting this to remind people of how ill soundtracks used to be. There was once a time where artists would release big singles mainly for movie soundtracks and put some of their best contributions and collaborations on them.

Shout outs to my homegirl Ayla for the “hate”!

Tha Dogg Pound – What Would You Do?

I heard this joint for the first time in a minute on Pandora radio, and it was like a breath of fresh chronic smoke. In the mid 90’s Death Row was the epitome of West Coast hip hop dropping hit after hit, and keeping gangsta rap alive. Today the West Coast scene isn’t as active as it used to be, but there’s definitely potential to resurrect it. There’s a lot of talent out here in Los Angeles, and with they work with the right people they can make an impact.

Kurupt – We Can Freak It

Vodpod videos no longer available.

All this week I’ve been bumping the new BlaKQout album by Quik & Kurupt and it’s a banger. The album is filled with that West Coast vibe that’s been missing from hip hop over the past few years. That brings us to our throwback for the day, Kurupt’s “We Can Freak It”. This joint still bangs till this day and I’m loving the smooth BattleCat production. Be sure to cop that BlaKQout album dropping this Tuesday!

Tha Dogg Pound – New York, New York

This has to be the illest diss video of all time. Snoop and Tha Dogg Pound hit New York where it hurts by not only dissing them on wax, but also putting a new meaning to the phrase stomping grounds. This video even made Jay admit the effect it had on NY when he says “It’s like New York’s been soft ever since Snoop came thru and crushed the buildings”. Mobb Deep and C-N-N responded to this track but of course it didn’t have the impact that “New York, New York” did. They couldv’e easily did a video tearing down Downtown LA or even Randy’s Donuts.

Got Ya Covered: The Old Generation Vs. XXL’s New Generation

21 10 2008

XXL’s December issue features Hip Hop’s new generation. There are three different covers including newcomers Charles Hamilton, Wale, Asher Roth, B.O.B., and many more.

This cover is reminiscent to The Source’s outstanding June 1998 cover that featured raps new generation at the time. The cover was a three page fold out, and unfortunately I can only find the first page of it.

Other artists that made the cover were: Big Pun, Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz, Cam’Ron, Noreaga, and Canibus. Let’s evaluate where these artists are now…
