Hope you all are enjoying your Black Friday and good ol Thanksgiving left overs. For today’s throwback joint, I’m posting the first single off of Jay’s Vol. 3 album “Do It Again”. This was the track that introduced Beanie and Amil to the mainstream Hip Hop scene and help launch their careers. Since then, Amil has been missing and has been rumored to be working at K-Mart. As for Beans, he’s been putting out diss tracks and airing out Jay for not being a loyal mentor and has been working with 50 Cent. Coincidentally, Beanie Sigel was brought out on Black Friday management, along with Philly native Eve. What a difference a decade makes amongst labelmates.

Takin’ Em Back – 11/13
13 11 2009I heard this joint on Pandora earlier today and it took me right back to when I was a young’n. Though Coolio has been making random comedy and reality TV appearances in the 00’s, he was once a big name in the 90’s. His first two albums were highly popular making today’s throwback joint one of his biggest hits. “Gangsta’s Paradise” was the theme for the Dangerous Minds film and also the name of his sophomore LP. Weird Al cleverly parodied the track which pissed Coolio off, and didn’t want to accept Weird Al’s apology. Just for that, I’m throwing in “Amish Paradise”, Weird Al’s rendition of “Gangsta’s Paradise”.

6 11 2009While we still wait for the highly anticpated Dre album titled Detox, I decided to post the classic “Forgot About Dre” as today’s throwback. The beat is insane, Em’s verse, even more crazy! Aside from this track, the whole Chronic 2001 was an amazing album making it one of the best Rap albums to have been released in the past two years. With the anticipation for Detox, it’s impossible to say we’ve “forgot about Dre”.

30 10 2009Michael Jackson – Thriller
Cliche choice? Maybe. Classic? Yes! It’s only right that “Thriller” is the throwback joint of the day with MJ’s documentary This Is It hitting theaters this week, and tomorrow being Halloween. As a shorty, everyone vibed to this video, even though the visuals had em shook. The video was definitely ahead of it’s time and is still enjoyable till this day making it timeless. The video was also re-done on This Is It and was going to be in 3D for MJ’s sold out tour. Now this, is one of the best videos of all time!

23 10 2009Mack 10 & Tha Dogg Pound – Nothin’ But The Cavi Hit
A certain someone complained about my lack of LA music here on SpazAppeal so I’m posting one of my favorite throwback joints from the West. “Nothin’ But The Cavi Hit Shit” was the main single off of the Rhyme & Reason Soundtrack in the late 90’s, pushing the documentary’s soundtrack to Gold status. Aside from me posting more LA material and the track being timeless, I’m also posting this to remind people of how ill soundtracks used to be. There was once a time where artists would release big singles mainly for movie soundtracks and put some of their best contributions and collaborations on them.
Shout outs to my homegirl Ayla for the “hate”!

16 10 2009As I said earlier this week, the filmed titled “Black Dynamite” drops today. I kicked things off with Pam Grier being my Chick of the Week, and today’s throwback video is “Got Your Money” by ODB which features numerous clips from “Dolemite”; one of the best known blaxploitation films. Not only does it fit the blaxploitation theme, the song still sounds dope till this day and the beat is one of Neptunes best. Black Dynamite is in theaters today!

Girls, Girls, Girls: Chick of the Week 10/12 – Pam Grier (NSFW)
12 10 2009
With the release of the blaxploitation Comedy “Black Dynamite” dropping this Friday, I decided to dedicate this week’s Chick of the Week to Pam Grier; who was one of the main attractions of blaxploitation films in the 70’s. For people who were born after the 1970’s like myself, you are full aware of Pam Grier by hearing her referenced in Black media, and from people who grew up in that era. Though Ms. Grier is still looking good at the age of 60, people will always remember her for being the iconic sex symbol of the 70’s.

9 10 2009OutKast – Elevators (Me & You)
I recently noticed the other day that there is a lack of OutKast material on this here blog, so I’m posting the video for one of their early joints that made me a fan. Though Kast introduced themselves to the world with their debut Southernplayalisticcadillacmuzik, their sophomore album put them in the limelight, and helped branded their style of creativity and lyricism. To kick off their extraterrestrial themed album ATLiens, here is today’s throwback joint, “Elevators (Me & You)”. Classic, wouldn’t you agree?

2 10 2009Ghostface Killah featuring Raekwon & Carl Thomas – Never Be the Same Again
Since Ghostface dropped his R&B themed album, Ghostdini: Wizard of Poetry…, I’m posting today’s throwback joint “Never Be The Same Again” off his third album Bulletproof Wallets. Tracks like these that Ghost has made throughout his career helped mold and inspire him to take a new direction with his current LP. Sidebar, what happened to Carl Thomas?

18 09 2009Raekwon feat. Method Man, Ghostface Killah & Cappadonna – Ice Cream
I met Raekwon yesterday at Fat Beats in LA and got both Cuban Linx signed. Today’s throwback joint is off the classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, reminiscent to when the Wu was in their prime. Joints like this, “You’re All I Need”, and “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” stuck to the Wu’s signature, rugged Hip Hop sound, but still had mainstream appeal.
If you haven’t got that Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 yet, make sure you cop that!
