R.I.P. Baatin of Slum Village

1 08 2009

Rapper Baatin (shown above on the right) of the elite underground group Slum Village has passed away yesterday, at age 35. Baatin departed from the group in 2004, but they reunited this year and planned on releasing a new album titled Villa Manifesto. Slum Village also lost their producer, Jay Dee a little over three years go, and now another member has passed. The reason for his death remains unknown.
I’m leaving you with the music video for “Tainted”, his verse was always my favorite on this track.

Fabolous – Holla Back (Young’n)

In honor of the release of Loso’s Way this week, today’s throwback joint is Fabolous’ “Young’n”. This video brings back memories of when I was a Young’n in High School and the trends of the beginning of the Millennium. Back in 01 throwbacks were fly, 2-ways were the sickest mobile devices, and people were Harlem Shakin’. All of these trends were captured in today’s vid!

Crucial Conflict – Hay
This was my joint way back when! Of course as a young’n I didn’t fully get it, but I still thought this was a banger. The quality isn’t the best but peep The Box (remember that?) captions at the bottom, and don’t dare call in for a video. Crucial Conflict was a group of four emcee’s from the Chi who had a fast style of rhyming similar to Twista and Bone Thugs. Their debut album The Final Tic went Gold off this single alone. On a sidenote, where has Crucial Conflict been?

Ol’ Dirty Bastard – Brooklyn Zoo

My throwback joint of the day comes from the late Ol Dirty Bastard with the underground classic, “Brooklyn Zoo”. The joint was also sampled on Alicia Keys’ “Girlfriend” and Ghostface used vocals from this track on “9 Milli Brothers” off his Fishscale album.
Back in ’95, Dirt Mcgirt emerged from the Wu-Tang Clan with a raw, unique yet gritty character transcending into grimey New York hip hop. His debut album, Return to the 36 Chambers was well received by critics and fans, and even went platinum. We need more standout artists like this today.

Girls, Girls, Girls, – Chick of the Week: 7/6 – Meet Team Drake!

The Lovely Ladies of “Best I Ever Had”
Drake - Best I Ever Had
This past weekend, Drake premiered his highly anticipated video for “Best I Ever Had”. Since it’s release, the video has received mixed reviews. Many thought the video didn’t live up to their expectations, and others liked the video for the busty eye candy that was Team Drake. Despite the mixed reviews for the basketball themed video, the female players made it far more enjoyable than the WNBA.
To support Drake’s role as a Coach in the music video, Team Drake was assembled of five ladies with fresh new faces, and nice breasts that’ll make any dudes dream team. The 305 has the scoop on these honey’s which helped make Team Drake the Chicks of the Week.

Missy Elliot – I Cant Stand the Rain
Vodpod videos no longer available.

In the mid 90’s, Missy Elliott hit the scene setting herself aside from many rap artists with her unique rap style. Her debut video, “I Can’t Stand the Rain” was original, creative, and caught the game off guard. The video had numerous cameo’s and featured Missy rapping in what looks like an inflated trash bag. As time went on, the video remained outstanding and is one of Hype Williams best videos to date. On a sidenote, where has Missy been? She definitely needs to link up with Timbo again.

Seeing is Believing 6/28 – Kanye Street Lights

Kanye West – Street Lights
Vodpod videos no longer available.

Kanye drops his sixth video off of his most eccentric album to date, 808’s & Heartbreak. To continue the artistic direction of the album, “Street Lights” is an animated video which is set in the future. This is one of my favorite cuts off the album, check out this video.
