NearClassics: Kanye West – Late Registration
18 12 2008
Before Kanye went autotune on us, he was one of the most perfect balanced mc’s when it comes to subject matter. His balance was reflected on his first two albums, where he talked about everything from consciousness, to gold digging women, to family emergencies. While College Dropout is hailed as Kanye’s best album, I actually liked Late Registration better. It’s very rare that sophomores are better than debuts, but in this case the second LP was slightly better than the first. Allow me to introduce one of my favorite albums ever. They ask him “why you call it Late Registration ‘Ye? Cause we taking these muh’fuckers back to school”

Seeing is Believing 12/16: Sooner or Later It All Comes Crashing Down!
16 12 2008N.E.R.D. – Sooner or Later
There hasn’t been too many post-worthy videos to hit the net lately, so I will gladly post the official video for one of my favorite tracks off Seeing Sounds. Unfortunately they had to reduce the long drum break towards the end of the track, but I’m feeling the economical crisis theme they put to it.

Takin’ Em Back – 12/12
12 12 2008Busta Rhymes – Woo Hah (Got You All In Check)
I remember as a young’n I was heavily fascinated by this video. It was lively, hype, and it branded Busta as an “animated” rapper. Regardless of Busta’s “animated” style, his old videos are timeless. Every time he hooks up with Hype Williams, the results are classic. Peep my favorite J’s at 4:24. On another note, what happened to rappers with distinctive personalities like this? Someone who’s videos are fun and exciting to see?

NearClassics: Prodigy – H.N.I.C.
12 12 2008
The infamous Mobb Deep emerged onto the rap scene in the mid 90’s with their gritty style of New York street rap. The duo consisted of producer-rapper Havoc, and Prodigy. After numerous solid releases, beefs, and controversies, Prodigy decided to make a solo album with production help and appearances with his crew mate Havoc. Apparently the things hip hop loved about early Mobb Deep albums, persisted with HNIC making it one of hip hop’s most slept on albums to date.

Album Review: Common – Universal Mind Control
10 12 2008Earlier this year, Common made the announcement that his upcoming album will not be as conscious as his prior releases, and it will not feature any production from Kanye West. Common’s last two albums Be and Finding Forever were almost fully produced by Kanye, and their undeniable chemistry helped revitalize Common’s career. On Common’s latest LP Universal Mind Control, Com decided to collaborate with The Neptunes to create feel good music. From the start of Common Sense’s catalog, he branded himself as a smooth, lyrical, conscious MC. With Common’s change of music direction, will fans find this album mind controlling or will it share the same criticism as Electric Circus?
